ICD-10 Update and Claims

Date: September 29, 2016

As previously discussed in various news items on our website and during our ICD-10 webinars, the ICD-10 code changes/updates become effective on October 1, 2016.  Will your clearinghouse and/or your Medicare contractor be prepared when you submit claims on October 3 with these new codes?  Some payers and clearinghouses have suggested that providers hold claims for several days to ensure that their systems have been updated.

On 9/26/16, NGS Medicare published a list of LCDs that have been revised to include the new and revised ICD-10 codes.  Other Medicare contractors may have as well.

We recommend that you visit your local Medicare contractor website and review new LCDs for completeness.  In addition, determine if you are able to submit the new codes through your clearinghouse and if they will be accepted by your payers.  It may be reasonable to hold claims for 4-5 days to give payers time to update their systems.

If you have not yet brought yourself and your team up to speed on these new codes, we still have a limited number of live webinars reviewing the ICD-10 update.  Visit our website for a complete schedule.  https://www.corcoranccg.com/products/ophthalmology-optometry-webinars/live-webinars/.
